Path-based multisite setup with sub-directory base url /site1

Hey guys, just a simple question.

Currently I’m using a simple WordPress CMS for my site https://www.example.com and I want to create new path-based sites such as https://www.example/site1 and https://www.example.com/site2. I don’t want to enable Multisite feature to the current WordPress CMS because of its complexity.

Is it possible to setup a separate WordPress Multisite with base url https://www.example/site1, and then when I add new site to the network, the url become https://www.example.com/site2 (NOT https://www.example.com/site1/site2)?
