• Help. I’m about to publish first issue of an online newspaper. WordPress site designer just “turned over the reins” of the Premium Themed WordPress site (transferred from his server to ours). It’s taken a while for him to turn over the site to us so there are a lot of changes and new additions to the news stories. In order to copy and paste text from Word to WordPress, he said it was VERY IMPORTANT that I paste the text someplace where the hidden codes will be stripped out, or the text will show up wrong. Now that I have accepted control over the site, he won’t tell me where that button is for the place where I’m supposed to paste the Word text to strip the codes. Does anyone else use a WordPress premium theme for their news site, who is willing to share this little hint with me (without charging me). So close to being able to publish – so frustrating!

  • There’s a “Paste from Word” button in the Visual Editor; it’s in the second row of buttons, which you can reveal by clicking the button at hte far right that says “Show/Hide Kitchen Sink” when you hover over it.

In the TinyMCE content editor where you want to paste your text, you should find a button that when you hover over it says ‘Paste from Word’. Has a little blue ‘W’ in the icon.

    1. You can paste into notepad first than copy and paste into your wordpress post editor.

    2. You can use TinyMce button inside post editor called “Paste as Plain Text”. There will be a pop-up and paste your content there.

With methode above, all hidden code will be striped out.

If you want to keep your MS word formatting, use “Paste From Word” button.

Edit: Geez, I’ve been beaten to the answer by 5 whole minutes… ??

Now that I have accepted control over the site, he won’t tell me where that button is for the place where I’m supposed to paste the Word text to strip the codes.

In the post editor, click on the icon with three rows. It should have a highlight title of “Show/Hide Kitchen Sink (Alt + Shift + Z)” which will reveal anothe (secret) set of buttons.

Look for the button with “W” and click that. That’s the “Paste from Word” button and that should take care of it for you.

Or you can just open up notepad on you computer, paste into that program, and then copy that notepad text and paste that into WordPress.

Convoluted, no? And I’m kidding about the secret part too. ??

I suggest the latter. Why? There are too many different variations of MS Word files over time, some from custom templates, some converted from other Rich Text Editors, etc…I have found the W button (functions) does not always strip out all hidden formatting or remarks etc (and this can cause haywire with posts/sites)

Got it – thanks. Note that the “Paste in Word” button only shows up AFTER the “Show Kitchen Sink” is selected – otherwise, it’s hidden. Useful information.
