• Hi,

Since updating to wordpress 2.8 — i am no longer able to paste my pages from Microsoft Word.

We used to format the document in word – fonts, colors, tables, sizes etc, then paste stright into wordpress, and it would look just like it did in the word document.

Now, when you paste it loses all formatting – but keeps the text.

Is there anyway to put this right?

(I know pasting from word adds a lot of unneeded code, but the time it saves makes it worth it for the few seconds it may add to loading times)

    Cheers!

  • Well, as far as I know, with 2.8 version auto-formatting option removed or something.

If you’re using a relatively recent version of Microsoft Word, look into its built in blogging features. Using either XML-RPC or Atom Publishing Protocol, you can have Word post your content directly into your WordPress blog. In so doing, all the formatting and such is correctly dealt with, by Word itself. You’ll need to enable the XML-RPC or Atom protocols on the Settings->Writing page in WordPress first.

I think Word has had this functionality since the 2007 version. Not sure of that, it might have been in the 2003 version as well. I don’t really know, I’d rather rip out my own kidney barehanded than touch Microsoft Word. ??

Note that it also frequently makes your site look like crap in any browser except IE. Most people don’t use IE, catering to them is not a great idea.

I’ve also known Word’s formatting completely break sites in IE – resulting in pages that only show a header and nothing else!

Avazbek — you say auto-formatting has been removed. Do you know how i can put it back in? / turn it on?

I really need the ability to post from word back on my blog.

I’ve just updated to 2.8.1 and that still isnt right — i may have to downgrade back to 2.7 if i cannot fix this ??

    Cheers for the help all.

List of Weblog Clients gives a perfect alternative to copy and paste from “Word”

IMHO, Windows Live Writer is the best one as long as you stick with MS Word publishing.

I’ve used both the “Paste word” button & WLW to paste Word into my blog. However I occasionally use Greek & Hebrew words which don’t display properly when pasted. I just need them to be displayed not translated (perhaps embedded?).
Its odd because after clicking on the “Paste Word” button & pasting the text into the pop up window, the Heb/Grk is properly displayed. Yet once I insert the text into the WP editor the Heb/Grk is displayed as random English letters.
The result is the same when pasting into and posting from WLW. However, I noticed that if I use “paste special” instead of “paste” the Heb/Grk display properly in my post.
Any solutions? Does the “paste special” include the extraneous Word code I’m trying to avoid? My blog is new so I don’t wan’t to create issues for the future.
