Past events not deprecating

I use a shortcode to display upcoming events ( [eme_events limit=3] ) and past events continue to be displayed AFTER the event has passed. Until a recent upgrade this did not occur. Is there something I can do so that past events are not displayed via a shortcode? Thanks.
