• I can see others having this problem of needing to reset the password on every login but still no answers are posted to the problem. I have had the problem for several months so I have avoided updating the site. Will the 3.0 version solve this problem? Also the automatic update through the dashboard does not show either. Still on version 2.xx.

  • Have you tried a different browser? This sounds like a cookie problem.

BTW – can you expand on the problem? What happens when you try to log in with the same password – i.e. what is prompting you to reset your password every time you log in? Do you get an error message? If so, copy and paste it here.

The problem has been reported by others in the troubleshooting. If I type my username and password it tries to login but returns a screen with just my user name and a blank password area.
If I go through the email reset (10-15 minute process) I can login in with the temp PW 1 time then I have to go though the same process again. This is even if I change my PW in the profile area.

This is 100% consistant with what others have reported but nobody has posted any solutions to the other’s posts. I have tried IE, Firefox, Google Chrome.

Have you tried deactivating all your plug-ins? Reinstalling WordPress?

(I have had many installs of 2.9.2 and none of my clients nor myself have ever reported this issue.)

I am looking into the plug-ins right now. What about a 3.x upgrade
The Dashboard is not giving an option to upgrade like it should…what’s going on here?

    What about a 3.x upgrade

It’s hard to say whether that’ll fix your issue but I would say it probably couldn’t hurt. Do you have a test install of your site on a development server? I always recommend upgrading your test install first, if possible.

The Dashboard is not giving an option to upgrade like it should…what’s going on here?

I recommend a manual FTP upgrade since you seem to have a lot of issues going on.

Be sure to check first that all your plug-ins are 3.1 compatible and follow all usual pre-upgrade backup protocols.

Thanks for your help zoonini. I am trying these ideas today.

It appears I do not have full admin priviledges. I only have rights to add content…is it possible for me to download 3.x, then import the old site allowing me to take control of the entire thing? Or am I held captive with the designer holding the admin role?

I am not sure what all the implications are here but I suggest you start a new thread since this is a very different problem.

I have the identical problem as, it seems, a lot of folks do. Here are the specific details, in case it helps to diagnose the problem.

When I type in my username, the WP admin box retains/holds my input — that is, the letters I type stay typed in the box. When I type in my password, as soon as I hit “enter,” the password box is cleared of all typing and remains empty. My username remains typed. I retry entering my password in the password box by copy/paste from my password log, to ensure the problem isn’t a typo. The first and second such attempts usually draw no error message, but error messages usually pop up after that. I try older passwords in case they might be “stuck” as the real password, but they don’t work either. Those old password entries always draw error messages.

To enter my site, I have to choose “forgot password,” and then follow the email password-reset process. The “new password” entry box allows me to type either a new password; but it also allows me to type in (what I think of as) my existing password, which it accepts as the “new” password. This suggests to me that whatever part of WP programming is supposed to remember my password, doesn’t.

The new password will allow me to access the admin panel for one working session. But, once I sign out or close out, every time I want to access my site admin again, I have to repeat this process.

I also entered my password on the profile page of the site, but there was no change in this behavior.

Based on the number of people who have this issue, this really seems like a bug rather than operator error. I hope this description helps someone to find a solution.

My site is hosted at GoDaddy, but I’ve hosted plenty of WP sites there and have never had this problem with any of them. The theme template I’m using is from Elegant Themes, but their forum advisor says this is a WP glitch, not a theme bug. Based on the lack of similar comments there, and the number of similar comments on this forum, that would appear to be likely.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need other information.

ok. in the general settings the WordPress address (URL) needs to have not https:// … it has to be https:// also you can try putting the www in front of the address and it will force it to destroy a rogue cookie if their is one

I had the same issue with the login page returning an empty password field, each time I entered my password, and the only “solution” being to click the “forgot password” link.

I saw ronman70’s suggestion and checked my Settings–>General in the Dashboard but found that these were right (https:// and www). I had also ruled out any issues with plug-ins and specific themes.

The solution for me was found in how my website is hosted. I have a hosting package where I am set up with one “primary” domain and my other domains are set as Add-on hosted domains, which means that all my other domains are sub-directories of my main domain. (They automatically redirect in the browser’s address bar, so you wouldn’t necessarily know that was the set up, but you can tell by looking in the file structure in your hosing console.) I believe this is quite a common way for hosting to be set up now.

To login I have to use a particular path in my address bar and there are two options:-

      https://myprimarydomain/myaddondomaindirectory/wp-admin; or
      https://myaddondomain/wp-login.php (i.e. wp-login.php instead of wp-admin)

Both these paths work for me. I can now happily log in-and-out without having to go through the password reset process each time (tearing my hair out). Hope this solution is useful to others.

I’m having same annoying problem: I try to login and my password is not accepted – just a blank, no message. I click on the ‘forgot password’ , enter my email address, get the email from WP and click on the link to reset password. I enter my same old password and get back in. I’m using windows 7, internet explorer, … never had a problem like this with any other site.

I have to go through this routing everytime I want to access my dashboard.

This solved the problem for me:

Instead of logging in at https://www.mysite.com/wp-admin
    I signed in with:
    https://www.mysite.com/wp-login.php

Don’t know why that solved the problem, but it did. Hope it works for you.

Thanks Pennypenn – that seems to work for me too!
