Password reset link fail

I Also have the exact same issue with Uncanny LearnDash Toolkit using WordPress Version 4.8.2

In both cases make sure you have a look at https://www.uncannyowl.com/knowledge-base/front-end-login/. Password reset link failures suggest that there is caching of some kind on your login pages. If you’re on a managed WordPress host like WP Engine, make sure you’ve requested that the login page URL be excluded from caching.

Hello and thank you for the fast response, I contacted my hosting company (InMotion Hosting) and they said there is no caching setup on the server.

I’ve also tested the issue locally and the same issue exists

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have a huge surge of users not able to reset there passwords.

Sorry Zenakos, I’m not sure what to suggest here. It’s used on thousands of sites successfully–as long as the page is properly excluded from any type of caching (including things like Cloudflare, some security plugins, etc.). If you can’t get it working you should consider trying a substitute, like Theme My Login.

I’ve kinda the same problem when a user wants to reset password the link that they received results on a page whit the URL: ?action=forgot&success=something and the error: Oops! Password reset failed to Send.

My site is hosted on WpEngine and yesterday I asked them to remove my login URL from caching as you suggested but the problem persists, any advice?

Can we continue this thread? I had the same issues and had WPE add my page to the not cache… but still getting “Oops! Password reset link failed.” any ideas of how to fix this?

Hi Kim,

I know this doesn’t help you, but we have dozens of sites (for our clients) on WP Engine using Front End Login without any password issues. The cause of issues in almost all cases is caching. Maybe there are other plugins installed that could be interfering or adding some layer of protection too? Have you also tried testing it on a WPE Staging site with all other plugins disabled (except ours) to see if it still happens? That would definitely help you isolate where the issue is.

Worst case scenario, you could always disable our plugin and try another option, like Theme My Login, instead.

Thanks, I understand. I will try disabling a few things. I am using the Gravy Forms user registration… (as recommended by LD) I don’t see how that might conflict, have you seen issues with that? Thanks.

Yeah, that could do it. Interestingly, we had a similar issue on a user’s site earlier this week, where they tried to use WooCommerce My Account shortcodes (which of course support password resets), the Woo endpoint for the account, and our shortcode all on the same page. So our plugin would try to reset passwords, but then Woo would intercept them and it was all a big mess. Those situations are very rare though.

And yes, we also like Gravity Forms for User Registration and use both that and ours on the same sites all the time.

If anyone else finds it helpful, I had this bug and it took 5 painful hours of my life to work out the solution. I am running a lot of plugins on the site including Woocommerce, Paid Memberships Pro, Gravity Forms and Learndash. The issue was actually with none of them. It turns out that because we use Sendgrid to send emails from our wordpress sites, click tracking was enabled in the emails which meant that the password reset link was being altered. Although it looked absolutely fine and if you copied the link and pasted into browser it worked, if you clicked the link it would change the auth key slightly and come up with the error.

Painful experience but if you’re having the same issue, perhaps take a look at the actual reset link and how your emails are being sent out!

Great find and thanks for sharing! Anything that modifies URLs could definitely cause issues with the reset. This may be something we should add to our documentation…
