Password reset blocked

Users who try to reset their password get the message “Invalid username or password. Lost your password?” and cannot reset passwords. This just started recently even though I have not made any changes in that time. The problem goes away when I disable the Stop Spammers plugin. I have gone through the settings but cannot determine which is causing the problem. I have tried disabling the following with no luck.

Check for Short Emails or Author Name</small>
Check for BBCodes
Check for Periods
Check for Hyphens

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
