Partially helpful

  • The plugin works more or less as described when following the instructions, however did not do it for me. I believe it could benefit from multiple improvements:

    – It does not seem to “see” images contained in galleries, nor when used as background in sliders, so these were all tagged as “seems not use”. Most of my images are used in these “containers” so if they’re not detected properly, they risk being erased or give a lot of work going through all to try to find out which are used and which aren’t.
    – When there are a LOT of images to take care of (which was my case), the plugin seems to be very resource-intensive on server level, my site was actually “blocked” for a short period by the hosting provider (I have a shared hosting plan) as it took up too much of the resources (I tried to erase 5000+ images at once…)
    – It might be helpful to make it possible to sort the columns (eg. by size, by name, …)

    Background info: WP/theme/plugins were all updated at the time of running the plugin. Using Divi theme and pro version of the Media Cleaner plugin. I wanted the plugin to review and clean my library, as due to a bug (probably caused by another plugin) I found a few images appeared to be multiplied many times (the original file, not the downsized images). I finally opted to do a complete re-install of the site…

    I need to work on each gallery/slider plugin in order to support it, so, unfortunately, the only way to make it work, is to contact me so that I can add more rules in the scan. You are welcome to do this ??

    Of course, it is; the plugin needs to absolutely go through your whole content and data in order to build a database of media entries and file references. Unfortunately, there is no other choice. If there was, I would love to hear it; but many developers joined me over the years in order to optimize that process, and right now, the plugin is actually extremely optimized. There isn’t much we can do.

    That said, whatever the size of the WordPress install is, the plugin works always fine (or at least, it should). One issue (which might be the case here) is that the plugin splits the whole process in little chunks. Those little chunks are requests to the server, and depending on the size of your install, there will be more or less of those requests. Some hosting services (usually cheap ones) unfortunately cute those requests when they are continuous. That’s unfortunate, and there is nothing we can do about it.

    Totally agree. That’s the feature I am being asked the most! I am actually working on a brand new-UI, more dynamic, and independent from the old and sluggish WordPress UI. To really push the plugin forward, there is no other way but to build a clean and new UI for it. I believe it will be ready in 4-5 weeks (and a bit earlier than that for people willing to test it).

    About this:

    As you guessed, that can’t be Media Cleaner (it doesn’t create files). That said, it could be WPML Media. If you are (or were) using it, I recommend you not to. This plugin indeed do that and makes WordPress very unstable. I talk with so many users having issues with it.

    Thank you for your fast feedback, much appreciated. I used the “regular” gallery and slider modules from Divi, no external plugins.

    Indeed it may have been the WPML Media plugin that caused my multiple undesired duplicated files, unfortunately WPML seems to get more and more buggy…
