I just updated two plugins, apparently successfully. When I tried make a new post, I simply got:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected ‘&’, expecting T_VARIABLE or ‘$’ in /home/a/1/0/13560/13560/public_html/notes/wp-content/plugins/backupwordpress/functions/backup.files.functions.php on line 148

This is meaningless to me. Is it possible to simply delete the plugin?
I get the same error message when trying
    https://tomraworth.com/notes/wp-admin/post-new.php
    or
    https://tomraworth.com/notes/index.html

I thought to simply update to 3.1.3…. but I see before I do that I have to deactivate plugins… and I have no access to do so.

Any help would be appreciated: I checked topics, and saw several “Parse error” entries, but none completely relevant.

I took a chance and FTPd into my server and deleted the whole backupwordpress folder from plug-ins. The parse error has gone, and I’m able to both access the site, and make new posts. Problem at least temporarily solved.
