After reading about child themes for the past day or so, I was wondering if this would work out…
Say you have a parent theme (any theme) and you want to add a child theme to it like say any other theme within the WP repository. Why couldn’t you just add whatever theme you wanted as a child into a different directory/folder? I’m a newbie to WP, and am not an uber coder either but does this make sense to anyone else?
What issues or barriers would result in trying to add another “root” or “parent theme” as a “child” instead?
Example – I am currently using the out-of-the box “Twenty Ten” as my sites “home” and “about” pages which are the first two pgs on my site. I would love to use the theme “Graphene” for the remaining pages for my site which will also include a forum. Is this possible without causing a ton of issues? All that I’ve read seems to indicate that I shouldn’t have problems trying to set my site up in this manner, but since I’m not very skilled at coding, I need all the advice I can get! Please help with whatever advice you may offer in this instance. Pretty good at utilizing the Codex and have purchased a copy of “Digging Into WordPress” by Chris Coyier & Jeff Starr as well so I am confident enough to try anything logical.

I guess the question I’ve posted should read like so – Can I just “borrow” the style.css from the Graphene theme and use it as my “child theme”? I know that the style.css file controls the layout of the page(s), but what about the functionality? Would I then have to include the functions.php file to maintain the functionality of the graphene theme for the remainder of the site?
