Parent product showing out of stock despite variation having stock (CSV import)

    I am trying to import thousands of items with the official Product CSV Import Suite. I have thousands of items and I’ve imported about the first thousand parent items, but have only imported one child variation. I want to get it right before importing all the other children.

    Unfortunately, while the child variation shows having stock and even lets me add to cart on the product description page, in the items list (product page) it shows as Out of Stock.

    I have searched the forums and found other people having similar issues but I’ve tried many things and I’m not getting a solution. I’ll include a brief report of the key things I’ve verified/tried.

    I’ve verified the parent item (anh-wb-ds-advosze) has Manage Stock unchecked. For now I only have imported a single variation (anh-wb-ds-advosze-un) which is enabled with Manage Stock? checked.

    I previously deleted the variation and re-imported with images for the child item because someone reported that helped them resolve the issue, but it did not work for me.

    The child item has a stock of 3.

    I have a bunch of custom attributes, and I can’t figure out a way to format the import rows correctly to show what I’m doing, but I’ll paste them in here in case they’re helpful (just for this one item, excluding the custom attributes except the one used for variation)

    I contacted support and after several back-and-forths, including sharing the CSVs I was using to import, they have determined it’s not an issue with the import plugin.

    I even uploaded their demo variable product with children (a “Tea Shirt”) and that had the same issue. I disabled all plugins except WooCommerce and that didn’t fix it.

    I’ve deleted and re-imported a set of items for testing purposes and they are all showing this issue:

    These items show as out of stock even though some of the variable items underneath have stock.

    Interestingly, I manually changed the stock of this item, so that some are in-stock and others out, and it now doesn’t show the Out of Stock:

    I then went to this item, clicked Edit Product, and then saved it without changing anything, and it started working correctly:

    I have thousands of items to import, which is why I’m using the csv importer, so it’s not feasible to go save each one individually.

    If I go to products and update 100 at a time (bulk edit), and make no changes but press Update, it also removes the Out of Stock error. That may be feasible though it’s a lot of work. Do you know what’s going on here and/or have better suggestions? Should I expect this issue to return later?

    I disabled all plugins except WooCommerce and that didn’t fix it.

    Did you also switch your Flatsome theme to the default Storefront?

    It would be appropriate to carry out a proper conflict test following our support guide here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/how-to-test-for-conflicts/.

    So that we can have a closer look at your setup, could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

    Once you share your system status report, we’ll be able to advise you further about this.

    I tried using Storefront. Indeed there were no Out of Stock messages on the category pages there, but in the demo for that theme I don’t see any Out of Stock messages on the category page so I’m not sure if that functionality is being tested properly with this theme.

    Note to anyone else encountering this problem who is frustrated because the bulk edit doesn’t work for them, but for whom that might be an acceptable solution if it worked:

    I just uploaded a large new batch of items to my site since at least there’s some feasible solution without updating every single item…still probably half a day of clicking, but at least I know it’s solvable. Well, the bulk edit didn’t work on the new uploads. I think it works because of some of the other troubleshooting steps I did. So, I repeated running all the tools on WooCommerce->Status->Tools(Tab) that seemed to clear/regenerate product info that could be relevant:
    clearing both transients at the top
    delete orphaned products
    regenerate product lookup tables
    recount terms

    I don’t know which of those did it, but after doing those the bulk edit works again. I think my products table also only included like 20 items or something small, so I switched it to 100 using Screen Options on the Products page. I found if I did a much larger set it would produce an error when I went to submit the change, but this was a good balance for me (it does slow each edit / page load down to have a larger number there, but saving 4 cycles helps a lot)

    If you are referring to the out of stock labels, they are added by the theme you are using.

    I don’t know which of those did it, but after doing those the bulk edit works again.

    To clarify, were you able to fix the issue? Could you tell us what you changed via bulk edit?

    I would not call the issue fixed. It doesn’t make sense to me that after importing thousands of items to the store in bulk, I need to do a bunch of clear/regenerate and then go through in batches of 100 or so items and edit/”update” each item without actually changing anything for it to work.

    Maybe the best way to describe it would be an apparent bug with a mildly painful workaround.

    If the default themes don’t show stock status on the product category pages, maybe that’s why this bug hasn’t been identified and fixed?

    Here, I think I have a way of demonstrating this bug without relying on my theme’s interface. Here I record a screencast video of looking at my Products list, where the (parent) products show Out of Stock. Then I bulk edit and Update without changing anything, and when it reloads they are all In Stock.

    I assume it isn’t desirable behavior that doing an Update without changing anything would change something, right? That couldn’t plausibly the the theme doing it I should think.

    Chances are that this is just a cache issue. When you hit the update button, it automatically flushes all the previously stored information and then updates it again.

    Similar, when you clear your transients (Status > Tools).
