• In the last week or so, when I make a new post, line breaks between paragraphs disappear.

I’ve searched the topics, but relevant posts are two or three years old.

I was not having this problem over the last three years until recently.

The visual editor used to be wysiwyg. If I pressed enter, I got a paragraph and a blank line. And when I updated the post, the line was there. But no more.

    Please help.

  • Unless you provide a link to a page demonstrating the problem, no one will be able to offer much in the way of assistance.

Your paragraphs aren’t in paragraph tags (</p></p>) but div tags (<div></div>) – which is why you have lost the paragraph formatting. Have you been using the HTML editor instead of the Visual one?

I normally use visual editor and hitting enter used to give me a paragraph. I just noticed the div tags.

I use html editor from time to time to adjust something.

I don’t know what changed to cause div tags to automatically be inserted.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I deactivated all the plugins. Tried to insert a paragraph by hitting enter. When I hit update the post, the line break disappears.

Another piece of info: I just tried another wordpress installation on the same server for another web site. And this one has a worse problem. I tried to creat a new post and when I add text to the visual editor and hit update. All text in the visual editor disappears.

Is it possible the these two problems are related?

Thank you for your efforts to help, esmi.

Are you pasting text in from elsewhere? Have you edited any of the files in the Twenty Ten theme?

Is it possible the these two problems are related?

No. The sites use completely different themes. The problems are unrelated.

Initially I did paste text directly from an email. But have since tried different approaches, like replacing the text via notepad.

The only theme file I changed was the footer and all I did was change a word that posts the “Proudly Powered by WordPress” to “Powered by WordPress”.

    1. Do not paste text into WordPress except from a plain text editor. Have you tried re-creating the post and typing the text in?

    2. Don’t edit the Twenty Ten theme. Your changes will be over-written the next time you upgrade WordPress. For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with any customisations.

I created a new post and hitting enter worked to create a paragraph.

Then, I copied the text from the problem post and copied it into textpad. I deleted the problem post.

I copied the text from textpad into a new wp post.

I reinstalled the Twenty Ten theme.

When I try to separate paragraphs by hitting enter and then hit update, the font seems to change a couple of times and when done updating, the line breaks are gone.

It sounds like something is still being copied from that post back in again.

Yes, you might be right. I just can’t find what it is. For now I’ve turned off the visual editor in my profile. I’ll try it again sometime.

esmi, thanks! Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
