paragraph text and Continue Reading on same line

Fairly new to WordPress, but having a blast! Using Genesis Framework and Agency child theme. I am using the Genesis Responsive Slider Plug-in in the Home Slider widget area which slides three different pages. The slider is supposed to use the first couple of lines of text, hard returns, then the <!–more–> tag, more hard returns, then the graphic.
I have tried paragraph breaks, line breaks and , then the more tag, but the [Continue Reading] button ends up on the same line as the last line of text.
I have tried changing content length, changing it to excerpt (lose [Continue Reading] button), to no avail.
I have typed in the more tag in the HTML input box, I have used the wysiwyg interface and clicked on the more tag…nothing works!
I am hoping there is a solution without going into the PHP as I have never coded PHP before.
Any help for a noob?
