Paid Theme Protection

  • There seem to be a lot of “grey” areas on this subject with no clear authoritative answers or guidelines. (at least not that I could find).
    I would like to do this correctly the first time.

    When developers create a premium paid version of a free theme that users can upgrade to…

    1. How does GPL licensing work for paid themes?
    2. Can developers protect their work from piracy (within WordPress guidelines/requirements)? If so, how?

    The only solution I can think of is to use activation keys.
