Paging not working (maybe related to permalinks?)

I posted in one of the permalink threads earlier and it turned out the problem was how I’d set up my category permalinks, so I thought it was fixed. And the permalinks do work — but now the paging doesn’t. When I click on “previous page” from the main blog screen, I get my theme 404 page. Any ideas?
