Pagination with image gallery?

Hello,
I’d like to show a limited set of images from a gallery (the images attached to a page), and use pagination (preferably Ajax) to see more photos. Eventually there will be hundreds of photos in the gallery, but we need to limit the size of it.

One of the shortcodes I’ve tried is

[gallery pagination="ajax" posts_per_page=6 order="desc" orderby="date"]
