Pagination broken when home page is static page

  • From wp version 4.5.1 it seems that the old error came back. If home page is static page with posts, then pagination is broken and every link to a page number (e.g.www.jdoe/page/5) leads to home page, no matter what you do.
    I already tried deactivating all plugins and with standard themes on different servers. The error is there.
    Old workaround on canonical url is not working anymore. Please help
