pagination doesn’t work

I took over this site and discovered that pagination does not work. When selecting page numbers, always first page is returned. I debugged this and found that mistake is in PHP code, where $current_page is not passed and therefore it is always one. I believe it is in file pagination.php (as I remember).

Is there a fix for this? I’m having the same problem.
an example is :
https://www.the-rink.com/articles/colorado-avalanche/
it will infinitely load but it loads the same 20 articles over and over.
