When I create a new page, it is being automatically added to the top menu.

I have looked and I do NOT have “Auto Add Pages” checked in Appearance/Menu page.

Additionally, those menu items are NOT listed in the Menu Structure section of the Appearance/Menu page.

I tried manually adding the page, then removing it. But, the errant item is still there, and when I tried adding it, a second didn’t appear, which is what I would have expected.

This did not happen under 4.2.1.

  • Hi, robertjm, & welcome. Under the ‘Manage Locations’ tab in the appearance > menu page, do you have the menu you’ve saved in the location of ‘Primary Navigation’ in the dropdown list?

When I go to the Manage Locations tab all three fields (Primary, Secondary, Footer) say “Select A Menu” so I’m assuming that means they’re not set. Right?

ACK!! So I just set Primary to Primary and it’s gone. Glad it’s fixed. But, that’s not something I’d have changed. Did it get reset during the latest WP core update?

I don’t think it got reset, robertjm. I think what’s occurring is that your theme supports more than 1 menu. The fact that pages were automatically being added to the top navigation menu tells me that the menu you’d created hadn’t been assigned to “primary navigation”, as that’s the menu that’s on top. Truthfully, it may not have been assigned to anywhere, as I’m not sure a location had ever been selected for it.

Anyway, I hope that clarifies a bit about how the WordPress menu structure works. Would you please be so kind as to mark the topic as ‘resolved’, if indeed it is? Also, please don’t hesitate to ask any other questions you may have.

Well, all I know is I’ve added pages all along, yet they’ve never automatically appeared in the primary menu until just now.

Well, robertjm, you got me. I have no idea. I suppose it’s possible that an update could reset that. Certainly when I do theme customization, i.e., use template files for different purposes, etc, I always use a child theme so the changes I make don’t get nuked in a theme update. Since you didn’t provide an url to your site, I don’t know what theme you’re using & therefore can’t really comment much.

Catch Box Pro theme. I’m actually using a child theme already.

    Here’s the page

But, like I said earlier, it’s resolved now.
