• Hey!

I have some wordpress pages already, and I usually can fix their problems, but this time I’m totally clueless.

This site has been runnning for a long time now, but some weeks ago when I tried to check on it I couldn’t open the page. Not even the wp-admin page.

    The page I’m talking about:
    https://www.legindigabor.com

When I try to open the page FF asks me to open or save an application/octet-stream file. Chrome downloads a .rar-ed html file or something. IE just shows random characters.
Since it gives no error message or code, It’s hard to look-up what can be the problem, but here’s what I tried already:
    – extended plugins folder with .hold on ftp
    – extended venture theme with .old on ftp
    – in FF about:config I set network:fetch-next (or something like this) false

I’m clueless rly, anyone who can, please try to help me, it’s important! Oh, and keeping my content on the page is essential!

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,
    Adam

  • There have been several reports in the forums of this happening with sites that have gzip compression enabled through caching plugins, and I can see you have W3 Total Cache running on your site. You may want to check with your host to make sure they haven’t changed anything on the server, then disable the gzip compression option in the W3 Total Cache plugin.

Try to access /wp-admin through another browser, since they may process the site different enough to allow you access. If you can, change the plugin settings and flush the cache. If not, you may need to manually remove the plugin and try again.

    Hey,
thanks for the help, but it didn’t work. I couldn’t access the admin surface in none of my browsers (I have IE, FF, Chrome), so I just removed the plugin via ftp.

    Any more idea anyone? ??

    Thanks!

yep… this just happened to me as well after i installed “All In One SEO”… when i click on the site or admin link it starts to download a file named “download” and wont open the site…. PLEASE HELP!!!! ive been working on this site for months…

Hello, When I try to go to my WordPress site it downloads file instead, and does not open the site, can anyone help please? thank you

Was this issue ever solved? I’m having the same problem — on multiple websites!

    Cynthia

Problem is same for me. I moved my website from my test servers to main domain and now I am facing the same issue, Chrome downloads the “donwload” file on index.php, downloads “wp-login.php” instead of running the backadmin, Firefox doing same and IE is also SAME for me.

Help me please because my event is going to held on 22nd October so I am worrying!

I resolved the issue. It’s quite simple !

Here’s what did work for me:

delete this line (or close to that)

    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php52 .php .php5 .php4 .php3

from your .htaccess file. No idea how that got there!

I also found comment #5 on this post helpful: https://forums.hostgator.com/wordpress-index-php-downloads-instead-opening-t76354.html

    To open .htaccess in cPanel:
Click File Manager and make sure to tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) before clicking Go. The .htaccess should show up where wp (wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes) is installed

If you don’t have an .htaccess file, then it’s probably another issue you have.

Hope this helps someone, and have a great day!!!

I have been editing my site with Google Chrome browser and it works great. I would test out the page on GC and IE and it was fine for some time. After taking a month off from editing, I have come to find that IE will not let me view the site as it just wants to download a file. The name of the file changes ever time I try to open the site. When I open it, it shows Hex code in the viewer.

I tried on my tablet using the same IE version, which is 11, and the same outcome.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Michael

the .htaccess file edit worked. Thanks for your post.

I removed the AddHandler line from the .htaccess file and it cleared up that error.

You save me the life junaidkhawaja

    Thank you !!

I’ve shamefully been off my site for a month. There was a recent WP update (from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2).

The PROBLEM: When I checked my site today and tried to open a link on a page it downloaded the file instead of opening the file in a new tab as it is suppose to and HAS done in the past.

I have done NO CHANGES to code or anything because I don’t know how to!! I also have not uploaded any new apps. Nothing.

    Here’s my page: https://preventhomelesspets.org/?page_id=188

Note: The Feline Authorization form opens in a new tab, the other blue highlighted forms do not (Rabies, Release of Authorization)

    Please Assist!!! Thank you.
