Posts with Gallery slideshow

    I created many of the posts on my web site about a year ago with the classic wordpress editor. Each post is pretty simple: page title, headline and an inserted gallery. Most of my initial posts have no slideshow at the top of the post. Yet, new pages now are appearing with a slideshow. I have looked at the html code for the page and they are exactly the same except for the text and the numbers of the images. I can see nothing different. How does this slide show get turned on and off. I want my site to be consistent. I would be content with one or the other. Anyone know how to turn this slideshow on or off?

    Hi @jerryereed,

    Hitchcock displays a slideshow at the top of each post that has the “Gallery” post format set. You can remove the slideshow by opening each post, clicking the “Post Format” dropdown in the “Status & Visibility” tab in the right sidebar, selecting “Standard”, and updating the post.

    In my right hand column there are Publish, Format, Categories, Tag, Featured image, Comments & Editor. I am using classic editor. Under “format”, I have switched from Gallery to Standard. There is no “Status and visibility” tab. Nothing changes. I thought maybe I needed to give my host time to update the cache, but still no change after several minutes.
    All my other posts are in the Gallery format and there is no slideshow. I am using wordpress 5.2.2 My solution was to re-create the post, exactly the same as before with format “Gallery” selected. This time it is created without a slideshow. Not sure why this happens. I think perhaps the key is to insert a gallery and not individual images to a post. As I recall initially I inserted images to the post and then deleted them, inserting a Gallery later instead. Could this been the reason a slideshow was created? Thanks for responding Anders.

    Sorry, the instructions I included described how to do it in the new Block Editor interface. It’s odd that the post still displayed a slideshow in the top of the post when the post format was set to “Standard”, though. The logic for displaying a slideshow in the theme is a pretty straightforward check whether the post format is “gallery” – if not, the post thumbnail is displayed.

    The reason for why some of your gallery posts display a slideshow and some don’t is because Hitchcock includes all images uploaded to each post in that posts gallery. So if you create a new post, set it to gallery, open the “Add Media” modal and upload four pictures to it, those four pictures will become attached to that post and displayed in the slideshow. If you only upload a single picture to it, only one image is attached to the post, and the image will be displayed without a slideshow.

    It’s a convoluted (and very flawed) workaround to WordPress themes not being allowed to store content in custom post meta fields.
