Page template option disappeared from page admin

I use a different template for the homepage, which was set by using the ‘page template’ dropdown in the page admin. It has been working fine until today when I logged in. The home page was using the regular template and the Page Template menu was no longer on the ‘edit page’ admin screen. Any ideas why this might suddenly disappear? Thanks.
