Page template not showing under page options

Hi,
I created various Page templates using the
<?php
/*
Template Name: filename
*/
?>
declaration at the beginning but they don’t show up in the dropdown under the page options. It seems to be limited to 5 options. All uploaded ascii, changed the permissions to 666, I don’t understand the problem. Please advise me, regards
