Hey there. Great plug and very useful. However, I have a suggestion for the page statuses. Currently you have published, pending review, and draft. That’s great but leaves a few holes in the typical desired logic for this type of system.

Suggestion 1 – make a setting to allow these to be published immediately, or pending for review as they currently are. On my site, I’m getting users submitting the same idea over and over again because they don’t know their submission was received and is pending review.

Suggestions 1b – when set to pending for review, allow a custom field that displays after submission so that the user is aware of this action. This will prevent the above where I have users submitting over and over. User feedback is critical on forms and this one is no different.

Suggestion 2 – After an idea is published, it still have an additional lifecycle that you’re not accounting for here. For example, if this is a website feature request (like mine is), then I might also have the additional statuses of in review, accepted, denied, in progress, and complete.

Suggestions 2b – In addition to adding those statuses, it would also be beneficial to be able to visually separate the on the front end. Maybe a css class is added for different statuses that can change their appearance. Also, you might want to have the filter default to show all except denied and complete to help keep the ones that are done by denial or implementation out of view. Of course, being able to see them by changing the filter would probably also be recommended so that users can see all old issues as well, but that they don’t immediately clutter up the view.

Anyways… I hope you take these suggestions. I’m sure that others would find this helpful as well.

    Best,
    Micha

  • Hey,

1/1b: When the post is pending, the user should be able to see it in their list of requests with a pending badge. Is that not the case on your site?

2/2b: Agreed – I had planned this for the pro version, but may add to the free version.

    Thanks,
    James

1/1b – Yes, this is the case, but I’m asking for a form confirmation dialog like “thanks for your submission”. That kind of thing.

2/2b – I’d buy a paid version if you had this, though I do kinda feel this core should be built into free version. I’d think things like custom statuses, custom actions, advanced filtering, adding images to requests, ability to add custom fields to request, etc. would be a few potential ideas for a paid version. I’d buy that even quicker, provided that the status thing is working. I feel this is core to any “idea system” and really should be there. As it stands, when an idea is approved, I really don’t have anything to do other than send to trash, but that’s not right either. Then users can think I ignored their ideas, when in fact I could have solved those ideas already.

Anyways. Great plugin. Thanks for your consideration.

Agree on all parts! I’ll see what I can do.

    Hey Micah,

    I just pushed v1.0.2:

    1. You can do this now using the jck_sfr_get_default_post_status filter.
    1b. Added notice after submission.
    2. Added statuses.
2b. Statuses have their own classes.
2c. Requests can be filtered by status.
2d. You can add your own statuses using the jck_sfr_statuses filter.

    Hope this helps!

    James,
Hey man, just finally getting around to this and the new changes are great! Thanks a ton!

On another note, is there any way that activity within this plugin can publish events to buddy press activity feed? I’m using this in a buddy press user support site and when people comment on this and when I change the status or approve, ideally I’d like that to work with buddy press. I’m not asking you to do that (unless you think that that is something other users would get use of), but more of it the structure of your plugin is done in a way that this would be feasible to customize.

Thanks again for the status changes. ??

    Micha
