Page speed slower with Polylang

I’ve been running Polylang on my website for several years and I have found no issues. However, since the 3.1 version was launched I’ve noticed a significant reduction in my page’s speed (it went from around 3-4 seconds to fully load to about 20 seconds now). Do you know why this may be happening?
