Page showing excerpts of other static pages

I’m working on a site for a writer. There will be a “books” page with several child pages — 1 for each of 3 books. I want the parent page to contain information about and links to each of the child book pages. Can anyone recommend a good way to go about this? I had thought about making a custom field for each book, but that could get clunky. If my friend writes another book, I’d have to change the hard coding to accommodate the additional field.
