I cannot add blocks. Where the icons should be I can empty boxes.
I have no plugins. This is a fresh install.
It’s looked this way with any of the themes.

    Any ideas would be awesome!

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

Chrome is up to date. I cleaned cache, cookies, and tried a guest browser. I tried Safri, and I even installed a Firefox (which has no extensions.) No dice.

I had no plugins installed on my site to make sure it wasn’t that. Another user said that installing the Really simple SSL plugin worked for him, so I tried that – and it did not work for me. I deleted it because my site already has SSL. Then I tried looking again – still not icons.

Any other ideas would be great! By the way, I haven’t ever seen the full block editor. Those empty boxes have been there since the day I installed WP last week.(the newest available one from your website.) I’m using Mac. Newest version of MacOS.

    Thank you!

Try adding define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to your wp-config.php file just below the define('DB_HOST' line.

To do so, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and edit the file with a plain text editor.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
    It did not work. ??

    (@macmanx)

Well that seems quite odd. Who’s your hosting provider, and what version of PHP are you running?

    Thread Starter pamelalibrarian

    (@pamelalibrarian)

I’m using SiteGround hosting and my version of PHP is 7.1.31
Let me know if a screenshot would be helpful for anything.

Yeah, would you please use https://snipboard.io/ to provide a screenshot?

I’m also sending you the place where I added the code you suggested earlier to make sure it looks right.

Huh, yeah I’ve never seen that before.

When you tried with all browser extensions off, was it _all_ of them, including any ad/tracker blockers?

Also, did you install WordPress manually, or use Siteground’s installer?

    Thread Starter pamelalibrarian

    (@pamelalibrarian)

Yes, with Chrome I used a “guest” browser, so no cache, no extensions.
Then I used Safari, since I never use it, it has no extensions.
Today I have access to my PC, so I tried Microsoft Edge. With Edge, it doesn’t even have the blocks, it’s just blank where the icons should be.
    Firefox – same.

I was going to ask you about the install. Rather than use SiteGround’s installer, I installed it manually because I was following the WordPress video in Lynda.com step-by-step. So…do you think that could be an issue?
I’d rather not have to reinstall, because this website if for my graduate class and will be graded this week. BUT, if you think that I should try that…I guess I could.

Yeah, it looks like some files could have been missed during the installation.

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Okay, I’ll try this after my professor grades the assignment, which may be a few days. I’ll report back afterwards. Thanks again for your help!

Hi, I am also facing the same issue.

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Ok, I’d propose the same solution.

    Thread Starter pamelalibrarian

    (@pamelalibrarian)

I’m really stumped here. I deleted all files, except for the two you mentioned. I re-upload a fresh copy of WordPress (except for those two files), then added those 2 back in. Still the empty box icons.

Then I decided that I would use SiteGround’s built in WordPress installation to see if maybe that would do the trick. So I deleted everything and started fresh without even adding in my own content files. Nope. Still empty box icons.

I wish I had known this would happen. I would’ve just stuck with using Google Sites. I will just install that plugin that brings back the old editor for now, so I can at least use it for now.

    Thanks anyway for the help.
