When I click the “Publish” button, the permalink on my page changes from https://mysite.com/about-us/ to https://mysite.com/us/. Thoughts? Full details below.

When I click “Add New” to create a new page, I am taken to the “Edit Page” screen. I can enter the title of my page (“About Us”) without issue. Still on the “Edit Page” screen, after I enter some content, the permalink is correctly displayed (https://mysite.com/about-us/). But when I click the “Publish” button, the permalink changes to https://mysite.com/us/. Any ideas why this is happening and/or how to resolve?

    My permalink settings are

    htpp://mysite.com/%category%/%postname%/

But that only refers to posts, not pages, correct?

    Thanks in advance.

edit: I also note that my “Contact Us” page has a permalink of https://mysite.com/contact. My blog posts are indeed of the correct permalink structure.

Also, the permalinks of pages *without* spaces in their titles (e.g. “Radio”) are correct (not truncated or anything like that).

Resolution: I forgot that the Yoast SEO plugin has a setting that automatically removes certain words (“stopwords”) from permalinks. So this was the reason my page permalinks were being automatically edited. I disabled it and my problem was resolved.

  • Do you have an SEO plugin installed? Some SEO plugins remove “stopwords” (words that they consider of little SEO value) from permalinks. They don’t seem to consider how silly some URLs can look without them.

If you do have an SEO plugin, they should have an option to disable this behaviour. WordPress SEO by Yoast’s option is in SEO > Permalinks > Remove stop words from slugs.

Thanks for the reply. That was exactly it–my Yoast SEO plugin. I like the idea for post permalinks, which can get lengthy. But maybe not so much for page permalinks. Do you know of any solution that would allow me to carry out this stopword stripping for posts but not pages?

edit: oops I marked the thread as resolved, so perhaps you can’t post an answer. I’ll research myself I guess.
