What do you see under appearance->menus on the dashboard? You can override the automatically created labels there,

I looked through those settings already, even created a whole new menu but still nothing. I do not see anything that indicates I can override the menu labels.

This was actually a plugin problem, Title Remover. It removes your title which messes up your mnu labels.
