Looks like I’ve seen basically a doubling of page load speeds on all of my sites with Wordfence installed. This is across multiple identical installs (used for benchmarking) across multiple hosting platforms, all have increased at the same time on the 18th, around 10 am.

The test sessions without Wordfence installed saw no change in performance. Sites behind a heavy caching/CDN platform appear to be the only Wordfence installs that are not really impacted, but everything else not being optimized is heavily impacted.

    Hello, @tf5_bassist

    Thanks for reaching out.

Can you please send over diagnostics from a few of the instances you’re seeing the issue with?

You can do that via Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Send report by email and send those to wftest @ wordfence dot com. Be sure to type in your forum username in the appropriate field there as well.

Please confirm here when those are sent so I can take a look for you.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Hey Scott, thanks for the reply. I’ve sent a handful of good examples over with the username of tf5_bassist. Please let me know if you need anything else to investigate.

    Thanks for sending those over!

Could you please check the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Log Files area and send over any log files that you can to the same email? I see it looks like logging is enabled and there are recent entries in the log files.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Sure thing. I sent all the pertinent log files from that area in a zip file, each site’s files in its own folder.

Thanks for sending those over and sorry for the delay. I’m taking a look at the logs and diagnostics for you. Can you confirm the hosting provider the test sites are on for me? You can email the information if you prefer. Are you noticing any difference if you switch themes or disable other plugins at the moment? Can you confirm that downgrading the Wordfence version on one of the instances is making a noticeable difference at the moment?

    Thanks again,
    Scott

    Hey Scott,

I emailed the hosting data over along with some extra details.

I haven’t switched themes or anything because these are all identical installs for benchmarking hosting performance. ?The theme in place, Newspaper by Tagdiv, was last updated on these sites on 7/30/21.

That said, now that I think about it, while the theme updated on the 30th, I believe there may have been a delay between when the theme updated and when the theme’s required plugins updated. ?That actually may be the cause here. ?Ugh. This is why I hate this theme lmaoooo.

Okay, so I’ve rolled back to the previous version of Wordfence and am currently awaiting enough testing intervals to occur on both Pingdom and Statuscake to get some new average data to see if there’s a change. ?But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s because the sites sat idle with broken theme plugins for much longer than I was aware of.

I’m going to keep monitoring, but I’m pretty sure at this point the previously “fast” results were because the theme updated, the plugins didn’t, and caused the pages being monitored to effectively be purged of most of the styling/etc.

Thanks for the confirmation @tf5_bassist — I was initially hoping we would have some hints in the error logs. I’m glad you were able to find something that may help in explaining the issue. It sounds like you’re going to give it a few days and reassess.

Please feel free to update me and let me know if you continue to have issues going forward, or if you have any additional questions.

Thanks for the quick responses, and sorry for taking up your time with this false alarm haha. So far, a day+ in there’s no change on the old version and historical data before the theme update does seem to line up. I’ll mark this as closed, thanks!
