Page heirarchy wordpress styling 404

Hopefully a simple question. What.php can i use to style my 404 error? I was using “404.php” from the starkers theme, but it does not seem o be working. What does wordpress look for when it needs to display a 404. I found it in the codex once but can’t seem to track it back down.
