    Hi

Very new to this but quickly getting the hang of it, or so I thought.

I was editing my page using a custom theme (from ChimeraThemes.com), I made one little adjustment, nothing major and nothing out of the ordinary. And when I went to view the changes I refreshed the page and it disappeared on me, replaced with a 404 page not found error. However, my theme header was still there and my default menu bar.

Can anyone help, do you think I’ve been hacked or is my custom theme dodgy? Is it possible to get it back?

    Thanks.

  • I don’t think you’ve been hacked, which is a good thing.
Because the theme header is showing up, I think you might have made a mistake (like a typo) in one of the include() functions – which is good because everything should start working when you fix it.

I’d be happy to look at the code (provided it’s a GPL theme, otherwise you might not be allowed to share the code), if you post the (full) code from the affected .php file on pastebin, and post the URL here. Just make sure there isn’t anything in the code you don’t want to be public… there shouldn’t be but it doesn’t hurt to double check.

Thanks for getting back to me.

To be perfectly honest, at the point where I lost the page I was still in the very early stages of setting up the layout of the very first page. So, it wasn’t too much of a concern, more a frustration. I did panic a little bit when the thought accord to me that I had been hacked. What I don’t understand is that I didn’t change any coding (per say). All I did was change drop down menus and check/uncheck options. I did, however, use random stokes of the keyboard to fill text boxes instead of ye auld lorem ipsum. Do you think that could of done it? I mean what are the chances??

I think, in this instance, I’m just going to delete the files from the site and start a fresh. I assume that’s a safe option!? Please let me know if it’s not. It’s a little bit of niggling worry that it might happen again, after I’ve done some real work. I think I’ll hold off on accepting your help this time in lieu of starting from scratch.

That said, I went and checked you teachmewp.com, a very cool site. And one I think I’m going to refer to regularly. Don’t worry, I’ll happily buy you a coffee. Would you be offended if I contacted you directly, using the details on your site?

    Thanks, for now.

Yes, If you don’t have any content to worry about losing, then starting over with a fresh installation is probably the easiest way of fixing this. If it happens again, don’t worry you can post here and we ca n fix it,

I’m glad you found my podcast, and no I don’t mind if you contact me directly, id be quite happy actually!
