Page Cache breaks blog posts

    Hi,

    I host my website on cloudways.com.

    I have setup W3 Total Cache as per the instructions in this article: https://www.cloudways.com/blog/how-to-use-w3-total-cache-wordpress/

    Caching seems to be working ok, except when I turn on Page Cache.

    When I enable Page Cache, I get occasional blank pages on blog pages (sometimes also a 503 error). When I refresh the browser, (cmd-R) the page loads, but incomplete (missing or incomplete header and footer, and other elements missing).

    When I disable Page Cache, everything works fine.

    I am testing in incognito, and always empty all caches.

    I have also tried all available page cache methods, they make no difference.

    I am not caching authorised users, so this setting does not affect them.

    What am I doing wrong?

    I have asked Cloudways for assistance but they were unable to give any.

    I am sorry about the issue you are experiencing and I am happy to assist you with this.
    Are you using any other Cacnig solution besides W3 Total Cache?
    Can you please share your .htaccess when Page Cache is enabled?
    Does the issue persist if you disable all other options in W3 Total Cache Performance>General settings except Page cache?
    Can you also please check the debug log for any errors?

    Hi Marco,

    I am using W3 Total Cache exclusively for caching purposes (I used to use WP Rocket, which is disabled). I have taken care to turn of minification in the theme plugin.

    I am using Cloudways as the host, with things like memcache and Varnish services turned on.

    The problem disappears when I turn off Page Cache.

    I will try your suggestion (“Does the issue persist if you disable all other options in W3 Total Cache Performance>General settings except Page cache?”) in the next couple of days and get back to you with the result.

    Hi Marko,

    I did the test you suggested.

    All caches in General Settings off, except for the Page Cache, and had the same result. Once I disable Page Cache, the blog pages are back to normal.

    Thank you for the provided info.

    It appears that you do not have the # BEGIN W3TC Page Cache core rules in your .htaccess file.
    Can you please enable the Page Cache settings, make a backup of your .htaccess file, remove everything between #BEGIN W3TC and #END W3TC (In your case all lines between and including # BEGIN W3TC CDN and # END W3TC Browser Cache ), save the .htaccess changes, and simply go to W3 Total Cache Dashboard and save all settings and purge the cache. After this new set of W3 Total Cache rules will be written in the .htaccess file. Make sure that # BEGIN W3TC Page Cache core rules are in there.

    Hello Marko,

    I removed the W3TC segments.

    When I enable Page Cache and “Save and Purge”, there is no change to the .htaccess file.

    I tried this multiple times. When I enable CDN and/or Browser Cache, the relevant segments are added to the .htaccess file.

    When I enable Page Cache, nothing changes in .htaccess (but the problems with the page that I mentioned before happen).

    What can I try next?

    Thank you for the info.
    In Pefrormance>Install, there are Rewrite Rules (based on active settings). Try manually updating your .htaccess file with those rules provided.

    What Caching method are you using for Page Cache?
    Also, are there any errors in the debug log?

    I am using “Opcode:Alternative PHP Cache”, though I have tried the other alternatives.

    I checked the log with name”apache_woocommerce-204613-869440.cloudwaysapps.com.error.log”

    Here are the last three lines after I enabled Page Cached and saved the setting:

    I’ve spoken with the team and this is a sign of too heavy code/theme/plugins used or unstable hosting environment (too weak plan used, server overloaded) or both.
    Yuu should check your hosting plan and consider upgrading.

    Hi Marko,

    I have looked into that too.

    I am testing on my staging site, with most plugins disabled (only essentials, like LearnDash and BuddyBoss Theme enabled).

    My hosting is a dedicated VM at Cloudways, with 8GB RAM (around 4GB used) and 120 GB disk space (around 60GB free). CPU load is around 50% – 60%.
