I’m a professional developer but a complete newbie to WordPress.

I’ve done a fair amount of reading, and I thought I had a clear mental picture of how plugins, themes and page builders relate to each other. I like to keep things simple and so had already made the mental decision that the latest Gutenberg editor probably feels like the most comfortable option for me. So I went in search of a theme to kick things off…

I found a list of the 25 Most Customisable WordPress Themes. When I started to read about these, I discovered that most seem to offer some kind of page-building experience, which is what I had already decided I didn’t need, having played with Elementor.

I am once again struggling to see the overlap and separation between a theme and a page builder. Could someone point me at information that may help to clear up my confusion?

  • There are no fixed rules how a theme should be built to run with certain PageBuilders. The common defaults are those that WordPress sets. Theoretically, every theme should work with every PageBuilder – but due to the constant technical development there are always discrepancies. Many themes do not even keep up with adaptations for changed defaults or (what is much more true) new functions that WordPress provides.

When choosing a theme, you should rather focus on what HTML code it outputs (as clean and minimalistic as possible would be optimal, if only because of SEO), whether it already provides the features you want (which would eliminate the need for additional plugins) and how up-to-date the theme is (you should be able to see that it is actively developed by the manufacturer). After that, you should simply test whether your preferred theme is compatible with Gutenberg – most themes that have been updated in the last 12 months are.

    Thank you for the reply.

I’ve followed your suggestions – with the exception of checking the HTML. I’m not sure yet what a ‘normal’ amount of HTML/CSS/JS would be for a typical WP theme so don’t know if my theme is doing well against that metric.

I went with Blocksy, which seems to do pretty much everything I want, is regularly updated and a reasonable price.

    Thank you for the advice.
