• For some odd reason, my original post seems to have disappeared, so I am reposting.

I am trying to reproduce a squarespace layout where text and images overlap. You can see it here [ redundant link removed ]

Are there any themes that can do this? Might I have no choice but to edit css by hand?

  • If it’s just for a page, you should do it with your CSS or with help from the block editor or a page builder plugin, if you need it.
If it’s for every page, it would need to use same images (or featured image) for the theme to do it.

How would the block editor allow me to (partially) overlap blocks? Which page builder plugin allows overlapping text and images?

The block editor has the Cover block which is text on top of an image. But I think that’s not quite what you are wanting. There are a lot of other block plugins available. I’ve never used a page builder, so I don’t know if that is featured in any of them.
By your answer, I’m guessing you want the effect on just one page, so maybe CSS would be easier. You can do it with position or negative margins.
