Overall, poorly handled
-
I run a small website of my own, for stories. Have a main page, a few sub pages and then story pages. Been using WP for roughly 6 years as I got tired of having to work the HTML of the page to do an update.
That said in my busy schedule I have gotten to where I can update my site with a new page and links between pages in under five minutes.
So imagine my surprise when after the last update I open my WP admin and see that mess staring back at me. I did not enjoy spending all that time just trying to figure out where everything was hidden, and one button now gone completely, or so the answer to my question was. So I understand the hate Gutenberg is getting.
First off, upon opening it the visual difference was radical compared to previous editors most use. Most people are busy with their daily lives so spending any more amount of time to figure out something they shouldn’t have to angers them. If Gutenberg had resembled previous editors the backlash wouldn’t have been as severe. But the fact so many had to spend time to figure out what was what doesn’t make a good first impression.
Last, the impression of coming here and reading comments. I get the impression by devs and such that they don’t care what users think.
Overall for me the product feels rushed and incomplete. Too incomplete to be made as the core editor of WP. Maybe in a few years it will be good, but that’s only if the developers’ attitudes change.
