Outside of shortcode?

I’m putting together a site that could really use this plugin, but it appears the only way to actually use the counter is through the shortcode in the content. I tried putting do_shortcode() with the same shortcode in the header of the my header (where I need the counter to appear) and it nothing shows up. Am I missing something? Is there template tag to use instead?
