    Hello,

I wanted to ask if anyone else is having problems regarding the tracking of the outbound links clicks. What happens is that on some browsers (for example, Chrome) when someone clicks on a link that will be tracked, a popup alert will be thrown at the browser. I’ve seen (unfortunately) that some people on my websites have clicked the same link a lot of times, probably because they didn’t know that an adv. popup warning was stopping them from opening the site, which probably caused them to not want to access it anymore.

Is there any workaround for this? I can understand why this happens (because of the way that clicks are tracked) however I would be interested to know if it’s possible to avoid this. I’ll temporarily deactivate this type of tracking.

    Thanks!

We are not aware of any popups in Chrome. The tracker uses a technique that is even transparent to most ad blockers. If you could provide more info regarding the specific environment, we can try and see if we can reproduce the issue. Are you sure it’s not older Explorer versions warning users about the plugin tracker? You can disable that specific piece of the tracker. See if that helps.

A review for SlimStat would be a nice way to say thank you.

I’ve noted that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. However, the warning that Chrome throws is the same as if the website tried to open a popup without user interaction (with the options “Always allow popups from X” or “Continue disallowing popups”).

I’ve seen this problem on multiple templates which makes me think that it’s more plugin-related than template-related.

I’ve had this happen to me with Chrome, and it’s not like it’s completely blocking the link click, but users have to allow popups from the site to do that, and most of them won’t be eager to do so because of the danger it could imply.

    Hope this helps.

Hm, what version of WP SlimStat are you using? The tracker doesn’t attempt to open any popups, by default. It could be a conflict with another plugin. What’s the URL of one of the sites showing the issue? WP SlimStat is running on our official site, slimstat.getused.to.it , can you check if you get a warning there too?

When does it happen? Apparently, when you setup a link to open on a new window. It’s probably because sending the request to track the click takes a bit, and when the browser detects that the “opening” of the new window takes a while it probably triggers the popup alert.

    Hope it helps.

It’s worth noting that you didn’t have links with “_new” so I had to middle-click them as if they were that type of link.

    That’s when it happens.

I see. I was able to replicate the issue, indeed. Apparently it only happens when you’re tracking an outbound link that OPENS in a new window.

I will try to understand why is that.

Thank you for pointing this out.

It doesn’t happen anymore in Chrome 33. Marking as resolved.
