There seems to be a strange problem with outbound link visibility where articles on my site that clearly have outbound links are not showing up in reports to have any outbound links when checked using 3rd party tools like AHREF. Specifically I was told “it looks like the content is actually contained in a container within the HTML”

I am not sure how long this has been a problem, but could it be related to this recent update?: Adjusted page link styling for changed HTML structure.

    Hi ??

The change mentioned was a CSS only change that removed the underline, there wasn’t a change that impacted HTML. If you’d like to run a quick test, you could try temporarily switching themes and run a report again to see if it’s theme related. If you’d like me to take a look at the HTML structure, please send a link. Thanks.

Thanks Andrew! Yes, that was my next step to possibly switch themes to see if it resolves the issue, but I need to get access to the testing tool… hopefully only temporarily b/c I have 4 sites using your theme & dialed in nicely. That would be great if you can take a look at the structure for me – can I email you a link rather than post here?

Actually one of the websites is in my profile ??

    Thanks for your reply.

If you’re able to edit your original topic question, there is a URL field provided that can’t be viewed by users that aren’t logged in.

Alternatively, inspect a page in question and copy an example link markup and paste it here or pastebin.com if it’s long.

Is there a particular link you’d like me to take a look at? There is anything that stands out as unusual on the home page.

They are saying its all the articles on my site – not showing up as having outbound links (even though they obviously do). Please look at this article page:

    Thanks.

Sorry, I’m not sure why that would be the case. An example link from that page is:

    <a href="xxx">more and more Millennial workers</a>

If you right click and inspect the element, you’ll see the code view in your browser’s developer tool. There isn’t anything unusual about the structure, at least not that I’m aware of.

Here is how that markup looks as a tree: https://imgur.com/a/njDesl2. Very standard.

Switching themes and re-running the test would be a good first step in troubleshooting the problem. You could also test with all plugins deactivated to see if there is a plugin issue.

Thanks for checking – I am honestly just as confused by this. They said to me “our system said there were no links present in the story. I initially thought the error was on our end, but after we did some digging, it looks like the content is actually contained in a container within the HTML. I checked this in a third-party tool, AHREFS, as well. According to AHREFs, your site has zero outbound links, which is really odd.”

You can rule out the theme by testing with a default WP theme. You can rule out a plugin issue by testing without any plugins activated.

I don’t know what the sentence “content is actually contained in a container within the HTML” means. If all of the above tests fail, you’d need to try to get more information on what that actually means.

    Good luck ??
