• Okay, seriously guys? When are we going to finally let PHP 5.2 die a proper death and move out of the dark ages here. Time to drop PHP 5.2 support and get with the times, yeah? It’s so bloody frustrating in an attempt to use new features of other libraries that no longer support 5.2, because they’ve decided taking phone calls from 2006, asking for their old, buggy code base back was too much of a pain in the rump to deal with.

It’s a contentious topic (oh boy, is it) but I 100% sure that the answer is “When enough users stop using it”.

I am confident that you can make your own plugin that upon activation checks for 5.4, posts an admin note saying “Please use a supported version of PHP” and deactivates. I do believe that’s permitted in the WordPress plugin repo.

Plugin Mod here: It’s permitted and lauded when you do.

There’s no need to drop support yet. There’s nothing in core WP that requires 5.3 or 5.4 features. Yet.

It’s not wp.org’s guidelines I’m concerned with. It’s Envato’s, and they say if WP supports it, so do I. ??
