  • I always like “out of the blue” posts as if the blog somehow exists outside the laws of cause and effect (which you also allude to in your post title ;)… No evidence of cause is not evidence of no cause. Might start working out the fix by backing up your .htaccess file and regenerate your permalinks. In the process, I’d get rid of “index.php” in the permalink structure.

Ummm… yeah sorry you didn’t appreciate my title.. whatever.

the index.php has been fine in the permalink structure for a year.. it never worked without it.

could this have happened due to my host upgrading their php or something??

First, take Beel’s suggestion, “backing up your .htaccess file and regenerate your permalinks.” If that doesn’t work, contact your hosting provider and ask if they have disabled mod_rewrite.

… and if I did not appreciate your title I would have said so… kids.

If it has been in the structure for a year, then I probably wouldn’t change unless that is now the problem. And it could be a host initiated change.

Well, I thin you knew exactly what I meant when I said out of the blue, it was an innocent cliche, just to signify that I was not screwing around with WP when this occured.

I am still pretty much in the dark (look, another cliche) and am not sure what to do. Have tried regenerating permalinks all different ways and.. sigh !

And did you contact your host?

I am working on it right now. I am not seeing any announcements of any changes.. but I’m working on finding out.

Yep, which is why I said I liked it, not that I didn’t aprreciate it… sometimes a fish…

I’d put in a support ticket to my host. I was checking out your site when I noticed you switched themes so it likely is not a problem with the index file in your one theme. I’ll cogitate a bit and see if I can dredge up something else.

Edit: Boy, slow typer. Got beat out by two posts.

I’m just switching themes b/c I’m looking for SOMETHING to have caused it.. man my head hurts..

I can’t get permalinks to work right on any themes.. fine yesterday.

and thanks. this stuff puts me in a tizzy.

Don’t blame you, take a deep breath, have a glass of wine…. hopefully your host will be able to explain!

It is probably going to be a while before I hear back from my host.

I’ve noticed many other posts with this problem, but no fixes.. if you search “permalinks stopped working” you’ll see.

Also, I upgraded recently… just from the most recent version to the newest, though.

Wow I’m stumped. I changed everything to the standard numbers style permalinks just so that it will function, but I can’t get any other permalinks style to work at all ??

When you do hear from your host, please post back so we know where you’re at with this, and also, knowing WHICH host we’re talking about might be nice….

Sounds increasingly like a change by your host. Normally “RewriteEngine on” in .htaccess would enable mod_rewrite. Post back after you hear from your host.
