So I just install BulletProof plugin on a couple WordPress sites running on my VPS which is WHM/Cpanel running ConfigServer Firewall (CSF) an LFD. I was looking for a plugin that used techniques that had the least overlap with CSF/LFD and saw BulletProof used .htaccess method for some of what it does which is what I was looking for. I even deactivated the login hack protection since LFD does that for me already.

However I think it does some other stuff that has issues, at least with my config. I’ve never had any out of memory errors but a few hours after activating Bulletproof I got messages from the server that it had to kill the mysql process because it was using 4GB of memory. Since nothing else was changed on the server and I’ve never had this issue before it obviously has to be something to do with BulletProof. I’ve since uninstalled.

Anyone else run into this issue?

I see this forum topic regarding cPanel CSF/LFD on our forum site: https://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/error-excessive-processes-running/

These errors are sent by cPanel CSF/LFD. See these links below for how to stop these errors from occurring or contact your host and ask them to add ignore rules to cPanel CSF/LFD.

Oops forgot to add this. I am not aware of anything in BPS that causes out of memory issues/problems. In the past 6 years I believe around 4 people have mentioned that they thought BPS was causing memory issues/problems, but all of those reported memory problems were actually being caused by something else or a chain reaction/combo type of problem scenario. ie X affects Y, which then breaks Z.

I’m aware of where the messages are coming from. As I mentioned, I never got this error before and nothing has changed with my server config or any of the websites being hosted. It happened just a couple hours after installing Bulletproof. It was the mysql process causing the out of memory. I guess it must have beem a strange coincidence. What I’m going to do is let the server run a week or so and see if the message comes back, install bulletproof again and see if it happens again. If it does then I’ll be 99% sure it’s bulletproof.

Does bulletproof login to the mysql user associated with the WordPress instance it is installed on? If so, that would indicate to me, based on a gut coming from 25 years sysadmin experience that it was indeed caused by bulletproof.

The VPS has 4GB memory and as I said, in over a year of this particular VPS being up, it’s never had this out of memory issue.

Cool a fellow Sys Admin – did 2 decades in the trenches myself on 10,000+ node networks. ??

“…then I’ll be 99% sure it’s bulletproof….” and cPanel CSF/LFD of course. BPS definitely does not cause any memory issues for any people who are not using cPanel CSF/LFD. So if there is a memory issue occurring then it has to do with these 2 likely factors since cPanel CSF/LFD is a firewall security feature: 1. Some htaccess code in BPS 2. that conflicts with or that does not work with cPanel CSF/LFD firewall security rules. I really do not know that much about cPanel CSF/LFD. So can’t make any logical guesses about what might be occurring.

The only MySQL things that BPS does are standard WP Queries for BPS option settings (ie get option x, y or z, which is standard/typical of all WP plugins), some Top Level DB Table Queries and of course BPS DB Backup backs up the MySQL database. All standard plugin stuff and nothing unusual.

If you do install BPS again and the errors start occurring again then you can use the BPS troubleshooting steps here to isolate exactly which BPS feature is causing the problem: https://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/read-me-first-free/#bps-free-general-troubleshooting
