Other types of posts

Hello, I love the way your recent posts widget displays things cleanly. I’m using in the top hat of the site listed to show some regular posts that have meeting minutes for my organization in them. Love it!

I would also like to display upcoming events of a particular category in the column next to them. My theme creates events as a post type I believe. I’m a novice. I can get the widget to display events, but when I try to filter out certain categories I lose the widget altogether. Any help you could offer would be wonderful!
