I just discovered this message on my old posts: “Your site doesn’t include support for the “undefined” block. You can leave this block intact, convert its content to a custom HTML block, or remove it entirely”.

I don’t understand what to do. I just want my posts to show up. I don’t want to have to fix 80 posts. I converted one to HTML. And I got the following message when I clicked the post several times to edit it in my admin after I converted it to HTML:

    “ERROR 502 – BAD GATEWAY
Why am I seeing this page?
The server that your request has reached is acting as a gateway or proxy to fulfil the request made by your client.

    Web Browser => Web Front-End => Web Back-End

This server (Web Front-End) received an invalid response from an upstream (Web Back-End) server it accessed to fulfil the request.

In most cases this will not mean that the upstream server is down, but rather that the upstream server and the gateway/proxy do not agree on the protocol for exchanging data.

This problem is most commonly caused when there is a problem with IP communications between the Web Front and Back-Ends. Before you attempt to resolve this problem you should clear your browser cache completely.

Our support staff will be happy to assist you in resolving this issue. Please contact our Live Support or reply to any Tickets you may have received from our technicians for further assistance.”

I can no longer get into the post to edit the story. It shows up in my posts, but I cannot edit it. And I need to edit it. So, what am to do? I also don’t understand what to do with any of the other 79 posts.

    I do have these questions:

    1. What does it mean to remove the block entirely?
    2. What happens to the post if I do remove the block entirely?
    3. If I leave it like it is, that means I can never edit it, correct? (Sometimes, links are broken, and I have to edit the post to remove the broken links. So I need to know if I can edit the story if that happens, or if I can even get to the story to fix broken links if I switch them to HTML and then get the bad message that I stated I got above.

Can you post an example or a url to the post? I cannot find anything on the main page or some of the posts i looked at.

WordPress 5.0 introduced a new editor (the block editor). The way that it formats the post is different than the old editor did, so if you edit an old post in the new editor, you can either convert to the new way (blocks) or leave it and it will treat it as a “Classic Block”. There are still bugs and things to work out with the new editor, so if you don’t want to mess with it right now, it’s easiest to install the plugin Classic Editor, and it has a setting to allow you to choose between editors or just always use Classic.

The gateway error is most likely because of the way the new editor talks to your server while editing (different from the old editor), so the Classic Editor is your best bet right now.

Here is a link to the post, He captured his father’s stories through stories:

However, the error message, as I stated, was in the post in my admin. The story shows up fine on the web. Today, I clicked on this post in my admin to edit, and I didn’t get the gateway error like I got two other times; I got the post. It is now in custom html. Can it be switched to block editing or classic editing, or is it forever stuck in custom html? How do I do switch it? Are there directions anywhere?

Another interesting thing is I randomly clicked some of my old posts today, those that were written before Gutenberg, and now the post has a message it is Classic; I don’t get the message I first wrote about. I find it very interesting that two days after I see posts with the message that the posts are “undefined blocks” they are now “Classic.” How did that happen?

Where can I find the information about troubleshooting Gutenberg?

I have used the new block editor for my new posts. It isn’t always easy to use – things are hard to find, for example – so I do hope they can fix the bugs soon.

Posts that you have converted to blocks aren’t fully converted until you Save. But if you haven’t turned revisions off, you should still have a revision of the post in the old format. Blocks can be converted to other blocks. Each block has a list of blocks it can convert to. There is no automated way to convert back to Classic format, unless you use a backup or revision (although there might be a plugin…).

See this support page on the editor.
