    Hi,

I used Duplicator several months ago to create a clone of a client site – and it was simply awesome, even awesomely simple. So thanks for that!

The clone was put into a /dev/ folder on the client’s server e.g. domain.com/dev/ so I had two WP installations and two databases.

Now the cloned site has been totally re-worked, new theme, new images, new content and now it’s ready to go back to the root folder.

And that’s where I am just a bit nervous and unclear as to the best approach. I have backed up both databases already and have yet to install Duplicator to the /dev/ version so can anyone guide me through the steps to be taken?

  • Hey Adendum,

    1. First be sure you have backups of everything offsite.
    2. If you follow the Quick Start and User Guide it will have all the touchpoints you need.
    3. If your not used to doing this kind of thing you might want to find some help at least the first few times.

    Cheers~

    Hi,

All done. Although not as simple as I had hoped!

When I first posted my main concern was avoiding duplicate content when bringing back the development site into the live server but once I started the process I decided to [a] backup everything and then [b] delete everything on the live server, so I was starting from scratch.

All went very well until I discovered a lot of missing images and on inspection of the database in phpMyAdmin I discovered over 1000 references to the development URL. I made some ‘manual’ changes to search and replace and that seemed to fix most of the problems.

In the end I still had to make some edits, via the backend, to various URLs in several slideshows and a few broken images.

Most of the time and effort was spent checking every page, every post and every link. But the job is done and the client is happy.

I just need to do this process again and figure out what step I missed (if any) to cause so many URL references to get missed….any ideas?

Yes, there was a bug in the update engine in 0.5.0 you need to update to 0.5.1 which has the fix… Sorry for the inconvenience…

    or too late even!

Once you get used to working with it you can usually redo it in about 5 minutes…

    Hi!

I believe I’m trying to do something like what Adendum did. My original blog is in my /public_html directory, and I cloned it into the /public_html/addondomain subfolder. Now I want to move that subfolder’s files into the /public_html directory.

I read somewhere that the directory where you want to copy should be completely empty. Is this true? How do I empty out the directory? Is it as simple as right clicking and choosing delete in my FTP?

    Thanks!

That’s pretty much what I did e.g. Use Filezilla to access the server and simply hit the delete key on each file and folder. I also used cPanel to delete the live database.

But as with everything computer wise – back everything up first!!

    Thanks Adendum!

I happen to also use Filezilla. My host also mentioned the cPanel when they replied to the same question. I think I already got this.

Yes, I already backed up and saved the files on my external disk. Thanks for reminding anyway!

    Everything looks answered… Resolving thread…
