• Here’s a suggestion, unless an option for this already exists. (Perhaps I could filter or hook into one of the plugin functions?)

Provide an option to either not save the un-compressed original, or don’t compress the original, (or save both versions as the default option.)

Here is an example of where this might be desirable: I’m building a website for a photographer which will contain several thousand photographs. Minimizing the total size of the media library is one important reason for using an image compression plugin.

The photographer already resizes his images to the maximum dimensions at which they can be displayed; he does not want them to be available any larger. He already optimizes the images in Photoshop before he uploads them. So the compression savings are not huge, but still worthwhile when compounded over lots of images.

The WordPress “Large” image size of his photos is the same as the original.

But with this plugin, the total aggregate file size for each photograph, including all sizes of each, is actually larger with your plugin because, besides the un-compressed original, it adds an extra compressed-original file (one extra file per photograph.) The size of that extra file is significantly larger than the savings on all of the other sizes combined.

Given the reSmush.it API, I don’t know whether this would be possible, but I suggest that if it is possible, it would be helpful to some users.

(There is no way that, in its current form, I can make it do this, is there?

  • Hi hommealone,

Sorry for this very late reply :/
Thanks for your suggestion. We will think about, and maybe it will be integrated in a future release. We’ll keep you in touch ??

In the meantime, do not hesitate to rate our plugin if you liked it ??

    Best regards,

    Thanks @maecia ,

I will not be rating it at this point, because I am not able to use it due to the issue I described above. It is not suitable for me in the current form for that reason. I wouldn’t give it a bad rating for being unsuitable, but without actually working with it I can’t determine it’s merit (though I suspect it works very well.)

Can you think of any way that I could perhaps over-ride the default functionality in order to either not save the un-compressed original, or don’t compress the original? Perhaps with a custom function over-ride, or even hacking the plugin code (bad practice in general, I know)?

    Thanks!

I have same issue. This add-on doubles the size of storage needed for attachments.
