Orders Disappeared or are they?

I am helping with a WooCommerce store and it seems like they are missing orders in the backend of the site. Customers have placed valid orders and payment was received from PayPal. Confirmation emails were sent but the orders are not registered in the backend of the WordPress site. Furthermore the invoice order number is not following any form of the sequential pattern. Instead of running around the 2450 mark it had one for 1900.Any advice and guidance would be appreciated.
I have tried to search online, however no-one else seems to have this problem?!***
It is not related to missing order numbers / or their sequential series. The actual order is missing from WooCommerce, whilst the confirmation was completed in PayPal.
WooCommerce experts advised me to cancel the staging site so that there is nothing else available online. However there is no staging site!
