Order search still very slow with HPOS

Thanks for getting in touch! I understand how a slow search can be frustrating, especially when you’re used to much faster results directly in the database.

To start, could we check on a few things? Please make sure your WooCommerce and any search-related plugins are up to date. Also, sometimes other plugins or high server load can slow down search. If everything’s updated, and you still face delays, please send over your system status report. You can find it by going to WooCommerce → Status, selecting Get system report, and then Copy for Support.

I’ve just switched to a Twenty theme and disabled all plugins but Woocommerce on our staging server. It still takes around 20 seconds to get the result of an email search. See the status report, please.

This is not really a minor issue. We need this search quite often for our customer support.

Yes and no. ?? While the original post was referring to the live site, my last post refers to the staging server where I disabled all plugins but Woocommerce and switched to a standard theme. I’ve just re-synced the orders on the staging server and run another order search. It still takes 25 seconds. I assume, Sync issues should not cause any problems.

Did you run some test searches? Maybe, the system is that slow. I wouldn’t know why, since searching for a customer email should be a super efficient database query with HPOS.

Thanks for the added info, and we appreciate your thorough testing on the staging server, that helps rule out plugin conflicts and theme issues. We haven’t encountered widespread reports of search delays with HPOS, so this seems unusual. Looking at your system status report, I noticed your database is quite large. Was that one of the reasons for switching to HPOS?

Just to check are HPOS Settings set up correctly? If you can share the settings here, we’ll take a closer look. Also, in the other thread, we talked about the compatibility mode settings, are they configured the same way on this staging site?

The database is quite large because I have not yet deleted the old post tables for orders. We have around 250k orders in the database. I wouldn’t consider this an excessively large shop. The wp_wc_orders table uses only 115 MB, the wp_wc_orders_meta table is quite large at just over 1 GB. But this is how Woocommerce works.

This is a unique issue and I need more information to find out what is causing the slow queries.

I noticed you have the Query Monitor plugin installed. Could activate it and show me a screenshot of the Database Queries section? I want to check how many Database queries are generated at the backend.

Yeah, sure. Here are the two very slow queries:

The other 100 qeries are super fast, they don’t matter very much in terms of performance.

These are the queries of the staging server with nothing but Woocommerce enabled and a default Twenty theme. This should be the best performance possible.

There is an open GitHub issue for a similar issue, we recommend reporting it on the open GitHub issue here: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues/41317. Sharing your findings there can help the developers better understand and address the situation.

In the mean time, please try using the Filter by registered customer filter? Here’s a screenshot for reference: https://snipboard.io/RSJi2e.jpg. This method should provide a faster search experience.

Thank you for posting the GitHub issue. I will share my findings there. But honestly, I’m not very confident that anybody will care. I posted another known and accepted (severe) bug 8 months ago. Nothing has been fixed so far which is pretty frustrating. The registered customer filter is not an option, since we allow purchasing as a guest. Many customers are not registered users.
