    Hi,
I’ve noticed an anomaly on our website that if a user does not have an account on our website, and they select a product to purchase … at checkout, if they select PayPal’s “Debit or Credit Card” option to make payment – the user can make a payment without creating a Paypal account. The payment window is also displayed on the checkout page.

But is a user is already logged into the website or logs into their account on the checkout page and then if they select PayPal’s “Debit or Credit Card” option to make payment – the payment is opened in a popup window and there is no option to make payment without creating a paypay account. It forces the user to create an account or to log into an existing account.

Has anyone seen this and is there a way to prevent this from happening?
I have checked my settings on our PayPal business account – the Optional Account setting is set to ON.

We have quite a few users on our website that do not have PayPal accounts and cant make payment to products.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello @fishnetad

for subscriptions, we have changed the payment setup for our last update. There were issues seen when a customer pays with Card Processing for a subscription that the 2nd payment would often not work and fail when they are not logged in when paying for the initial order. In order to avoid this situation from occurring, we currently do not allow guest users to checkout for subscriptions. We are working hard to get resolve this issue in a better way (so that guest checkouts can be done for subscriptions), but for now, we choose to avoid failing payments instead.

I will link this thread to the guest checkout bug we have open for this, so you should be informed when a fix is in place or available for you.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    Hi Joost,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

We do have subscriptions on our website, but this happens even when the user tries to purchase a non-subscription product. Plus, we don’t allow any guest checkouts on our platform. All purchases will create an account for new users.

My problem is that currently only new users can make a purchase using the PayPal credit/debit card process. Existing users that are logged in are not given the option … they are being forced to log into their PayPal account or create a PayPal account if they don’t have one. Many of our users don’t want to have a PayPal account.

    Hope that makes sense.
    Regards,
    Sebastian

    Hello @fishnetad

I checked with my team and have to correct myself, this is not related to the known issue with subscriptions and has nothing to do with it.

When using the default credit card smart button, PayPal decides whether or not a PayPal account is required. This depends on multiple different factors and is handled in the PayPal server. The plugin gathers details from the user, browser, location etc and sends this to the PayPal server. The PayPal server returns what they deem is necessary for the transaction. The plugin does not have control over this.
If the user has an account on the site or not can be one factor for PayPal to decide whether or not a PayPal account would be required for the transaction, but it’s not the only factor.

If you want the users to not have to register a PP account for credit card payments, then you should probably only use the PayPal Card Processing option.

    Hopefully, this answers your question.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    Hi Joost,

It’s the inconsistency of what PayPal dictates that’s frustrating.

    You mention …
“If you want the users to not have to register a PP account for credit card payments, then you should probably only use the PayPal Card Processing option.”
How or where would I disable need for a PayPal account and only use the Card Processing option. This would probably be the best solution.

Our problem is that our courses are available worldwide. We are based in South Africa, but need the store to be in Dollars for the consistency of the price points. PayPal is our only (from what we have research) solution to have a Dollar based store as none of our available Payment Gateways permit anything other than Rands. We dont have access to Stripe or any other international payment Gateways as they are not supported in South Africa.

    Hello @fishnetad

If you want to avoid customers running into the need to have a PayPal account, you can disable the PayPal payment option in the main settings page, by disabling:
    – Enable buttons on Checkout
    – Enable buttons on Single Product
    – Buttons on Cart
    – Buttons on Mini Cart
    Then press save.

Now you need to go to the tab “PayPal Card Processing” and only activate “Enable PayPal Card Processing” and press save again.
Now your customer will only see the credit card payment option and won’t even know it is provided by PayPal. However, the restrictions of PayPal do apply to them as described here: https://developer.paypal.com/docs/business/checkout/advanced-card-payments/currency-availability-advanced-cards/

I hope this gets you the result you are looking for. Let me know if you have any other questions for us.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    I use WooCommerce PayPal Payments
The purchase via paypal from a “logged customer” does not work and gives me an error.
On the other hand, the transaction without registration but with data entry in the check out phase works.

    Can you help me?
