Is there a way to optimize the images that are suggested. Obviously the ones that come from your site’s media gallery can already be optimized externally, but if you use an image from the Web story suggestion section I am unable to access them with my image optimizer. This results in much slower speeds and optimization scores. I suppose I could download the image to my local computer, then Uploaded to my websites gallery and optimise it that way before I use it, but this is quite the extensive process. Is there a better way?

@kalebwithak Thank you for submitting your topic. The Web Stories plugin already utilizes multiple image sizes to improve image loading. The images you are seeing in the Web Stories media pane is from the Unsplash library. Are you not able to access images from the media pane? What image optimizer are you using?

    Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I am currently using EWWW. What I found was that after creating a webstory with upsplash library images, Pagespeed Insights still told me the images were in serious need of optimization. Not to mention my mobile speed went from a 98 to a 61. Regardless, after I saved the images locally and converted the jfif(s) to png(s), I uploaded them to my media gallery and was then able to optimize them further. They are now in WebP format and only a fraction of their original size. The page with the webstory only gets up to about 81, but I suppose this is an acceptable tradeoff. I also noticed that GTMetrix adds the time a webstory runs into the total page load time, but Google does not. Odd. Thanks again!

@kalebwithak That image optimizer only optimize images from your media library and cannot optimize external images like the one from the Unsplash media pane.

We do plan to look into further optimizations as mentioned in this GitHub issue.
